Investments that Pay Off

This past weekend in my sermon, I talked briefly about how I invested time in getting to know my wife. This was a long process (at least it felt like it to 15-year old me). The reason that I invested this time was because it was worth it to me.

There are many difficult things that we do because they are worth it to us, yet to other people they may not be worth it. For some of us (not me), going to the gym each day is worth the time and effort. Maybe for some of us (again, not me), dieting is worth the pain and suffering. Investing time in learning an instrument or a foreign language could be other examples.

When it comes to the greatest payoff for our investments, the thing that we need to be doing is investing time into getting to know the Lord. We are all going to meet Him one day, and you want to hear “well done, my good and faithful servant” and not “depart from me. I never knew you”.

We get to know the Lord through times in Bible study and prayer. God gave us His special revelation in the Word of God so that we could get to know Him. This is of utmost importance to each of us, as God speaks to us through His Word.

2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. As we get to know God through His Word, we see that His Word is useful to us in all of these areas of life. These are the areas in which we need to be investing our time, since they are going to matter for all eternity.
