Who Are You?
And you shall be my people,
and I will be your God.”
Jeremiah 30:22
A few years ago a movie came out called Overcomer. It was a phenomenal movie. If you haven’t seen it yet, you need to. There is one part of the movie where John (the coach) was asked the question: “Who are you?” He answers that he is a basketball coach, then history teacher, husband, father, white American male, and so on. He struggles to answer the question as Thomas continues to probe him, “Who are you?” Finally, through the struggle, John proclaims that he is a Christian. Thomas asked why that was so far down on the list.
When you think about who you are, what comes to mind? How does your list go? Is it your profession? Is it your children or friends? Maybe it is your hobbies. When we think about it, what really defines us?
The prophet Jeremiah gives some hope and encouragement to God’s people. Through all of their hardships, all of their trials, God declares that He will be our God and we will be His people. When everything is stripped away, when nothing is how we planned it, we are still God’s. We are His people and He is our God. This is huge. Think of this – the God who spoke all creation in existence desires to have us as a people. If God is our god, then we must honor Him as God. As we look to what our schedules look like, what we can add in and what we cannot add in, we need to remember that we are God’s. As we attempt to define who we are, we need to remember that we are His. As we evaluate what matters most to us, we must not forget the relationship that God has made possible for us through His son, Jesus Christ.
Pray:
· For us to remember that God is our god
· For us to be defined by this one singular fact
· That we would seek to honor God as God in our daily living
