Being God’s servant
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus Philippians 2:3-5
As we look at Scripture, we see God use His people over and over again. We even see Him use those who are not His people. He uses these people to bless others, love others, and glorify His name. One thing that all of these people have in common is that they are broken, flawed people. I am one of them.
As I’ve been preparing to preach through 1 Peter, I’ve noticed just how broken and flawed some of God’s servants actually are. Many of us know how Paul considered himself the worst of sinners, but Peter was referred to as Satan by Jesus! If that’s not broken, I don’t know what is! Yet, Peter goes on to be used by God at Pentecost, preaching to the crowds about Jesus - and 3,000 were added to the Church that day.
As a broken and flawed person, this gives me hope, knowing that I, too, can be used in mighty ways. You can too. One thing that we must remember, though, is that we are called to serve the Lord humbly. We are called to put others first and not to think more or ourselves. Humility is difficult for me, and many other people. To help myself remain humble, I have to constantly remind myself that without God I am nothing.
I was nothing when I came to the Lord. I was dead in my trespasses and without the hope of God in this world. But God stepped into my life and changed everything. We need to remember what He has done for us and what we know He can do for others. Be humble and serve the Lord.
